- Cued Speech is a system made of hand shapes, hand placements, and mouth shapes that gives access to sound-based languages beyond hearing.
- Cued Speech converts phonemes, meaning the smallest individual sound units of an audible language, into so-called kinemes (hand shapes, hand placements) that accompany the visemes (mouth shapes) when speaking.
- Together, kinemes and visemes convert an auditory-based language into a vision-based representation that is unambiguous, as opposed to lip reading alone.
